The next morning, I have an email waiting for me from Kellan—that is, Mr. Fitzgerald—when I get in. It was sent at six thirty this morning. Why the hell was he up so early working?

Please come to my office as soon as you get in.

Great. How on earth could I face him after last night? Granted, it was a nice night. It was…a great night. The food was incredible, and the conversation was even better. I had a feeling that I was seeing and talking to the real him—the guy who grew up playing Final Fantasy and Resident Evil and Mortal Kombat and all the titles I grew up on and loved too. The guy who likes to spend a quiet week camping by himself. The guy who goes out of his way to make it to every single dance recital and softball game his niece has, so that she always has her uncle around.

And then I had to go and mess it all up by making a dumb date joke. I smack a hand to my face. Of course, I knew it wasn’t a date. He’s gorgeous—he probably has a steady girlfriend. Maybe a fiancée. And she’s probably a lot more glamorous and put together than me, a lowly developer nerd. He got flustered when I said that, but probably because he was trying to find a nice way to tell me he’d never go for a geek like me.

But he’s your boss. So why do you even care about that?

“Penny for your thoughts, punkin.”

Raimi’s voice makes me lift my head. The cheerful smile on his face drops away. “What’s with the long face, honey pie? Shouldn’t you be smiling? You’re on the cusp of taking over the gaming industry as we know it.”

I give him a weak smile. “I’m afraid there’s been a new development. A personal one.”

Raimi gasps theatrically, grabs a chair from the vacant cube across from mine, and pulls it over. “Did he bend you over his desk and fuck you like the sexy beast he is?”

My jaw drops. “Raimi!”

He rolls his eyes, waving a hand. “Oh please, spare me your pearl clutching. I’ve seen you together. I can read you like a book. You want him. He wants you.”

“I don’t know how you can possibly think that. We weren’t even really nice to each other until last night.”

“You should’ve let him be even nicer,” he says with a smirk.

“Well, things got awkward real fast when I made a date joke, and I could tell he wanted to be nice about letting me down,” I say sharply. “Now I have to go meet with him in his office. He’s probably going to fire me for unprofessionalism and sexual harassment.”

“I highly doubt that, Mel,” Raimi says. “Just go see what he says.”

“Okay, but you’re going to help me pack up my desk,” I say darkly.

He waves me off. “Go.”

With heavy feet I walk toward Mr. Fitzgerald’s office, pausing before I knock to make sure my jeans and white top are neat.
